Category: IP and Core Protocols, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Handles NAT mapping entries and session tracking on Ascend access equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-MIBNAT-MIB?

ASCEND-MIBNAT-MIB is a proprietary Ascend Communications MIB for managing Network Address Translation mappings and session tracking on Ascend access equipment. It exposes configuration data (NAT pools, address mapping rules) as well as dynamic session-tracking state showing active translated connections. Its monitoring value is primarily software/service-oriented: tracking active NAT session counts, pool address exhaustion, and translation table growth, which are early indicators of address-pool capacity problems or unusual traffic load. It is used alongside the vendor's IP and interface MIBs since NAT operates on top of the router's IP forwarding path. It was deployed on Ascend routers providing shared internet access for small/medium sites and dial-up aggregation points. Engineers can download the ASCEND-MIBNAT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBNAT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend WAN access router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the NAT session and mapping tables (an ascendNatSessionTable/ascendNatMapEntry style structure) to track how many translated sessions are active and whether the outside address pool is near exhaustion, since a pool running out of available ports or addresses would show up as new connection failures for internal hosts. No sample objects were provided, so these table names are inferred from the module's stated NAT function rather than confirmed from source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active NAT session count
  • address pool utilization
  • translation mapping entries
  • session timeout events
  • port allocation exhaustion
