What Is ALTIGA-L2TP-STATS-MIB?

ALTIGA-L2TP-STATS-MIB is a proprietary MIB from Altiga Networks (Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrator) for tracking L2TP tunnel and session statistics on the device acting as an L2TP Access Concentrator or Network Server. It exposes counters for total, active, failed, and maximum tunnels and sessions, alongside vendor name and firmware revision identification fields. This MIB directly supports software/service-status monitoring: active-versus-maximum tunnel and session counts reveal capacity saturation, rising failed-tunnel and failed-authentication counts flag negotiation or credential problems, and the firmware revision object supports software version tracking for inventory and compliance. It relies on IETF L2TP protocol concepts (RFC 2661) for its terminology and is part of the same Altiga enterprise MIB suite as the other ALTIGA-*-STATS modules. It is deployed on Cisco/Altiga VPN 3000 Concentrators terminating L2TP-based remote-access VPN tunnels for mobile or remote workers. Engineers can download the ALTIGA-L2TP-STATS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An administrator would poll alL2tpStatsActiveTunnels and alL2tpStatsActiveSessions against alL2tpStatsMaxTunnels and alL2tpStatsMaxSessions to detect when the concentrator is approaching its configured capacity limits. A rising alL2tpStatsFailedAuthentications count alongside alL2tpStatsFailedTunnels indicates a wave of failed VPN client logins worth investigating. Checking alL2tpStatsFirmwareRev and alL2tpStatsVendorName lets an admin confirm all concentrators in a fleet are running the expected software version.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using alL2tpStatsTotalTunnels OID:

Select a Cisco (Altiga) VPN 3000 Series Concentrator (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type alL2tpStatsTotalTunnels into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object returns the total number of tunnels that have successfully reached the established state. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
