This counter tracks how many times a put operation had to be retried because it initially failed but succeeded on the second or later attempt. If you have 50000 total puts but only 50 retries, your write success rate is excellent; if retries approach the total number of puts, the tape library is very unstable. Network engineers use this to detect early signs of failing drive mechanisms or bad tape cartridges.
