What Is A3COM-HUAWEI-POSA-MIB?

A3COM-HUAWEI-POSA-MIB is a joint 3Com/Huawei (H3C) proprietary MIB for managing the Point-Of-Sale Access (POSA) feature on H3C/3Com switches, which provides dedicated network connectivity and session management for retail point-of-sale terminals. It exposes configuration objects for the POSA server (enable state, answer/trade/idle timeout values) and a per-application table tracking POS application instances by ID, plus a rich set of trap-enable flags for server/application state changes and negotiation failures. Its monitoring emphasis is on service/session health for POS connectivity rather than general hardware status: administrators watch for terminal hang-up events, link or physical negotiation failures, and server/application state transitions that would indicate a POS terminal has lost its network session. It is a switch-feature MIB layered on the vendor's own switching/interface object model rather than an IETF standard. An administrator would enable h3cPosaSrvStateChangeTrapEnable and h3cPosaTerminalHangUpTrapEnable to be notified whenever a POS terminal's session unexpectedly drops, and would poll h3cPosaAppTable/h3cPosaAppEntry keyed by h3cPosaAppID to see the state of each configured POS application instance. Tuning h3cPosaFcmAnswerTimeout, h3cPosaFcmTradeTimeout, and h3cPosaFcmIdleTimeout against observed h3cPosaFcmLnkNegoFailTrapEnable/h3cPosaFcmPhyNegoFailTrapEnable events helps diagnose whether POS transaction failures are due to timeouts that are too aggressive versus genuine physical-layer negotiation problems.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using h3cPosaFcmStatTimeoutCnts OID:

Select an H3C/3Com enterprise switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type h3cPosaFcmStatTimeoutCnts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of disconnections because of trade timeouts. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
