What Is A3COM-HUAWEI-DSP-MIB?

A3COM-HUAWEI-DSP-MIB (jointly branded 3Com/Huawei, deployed on H3C devices) defines objects for monitoring Digital Signal Processor (DSP) resources used for voice-processing functions such as voice gateways or media processing on H3C routers/switches. It exposes per-VPM (Voice Processing Module) and per-DSP status, including operational state, resource-utilization percentage, high-water-mark utilization, and maximum channel capacity, plus DSP-specific trap objects. This is a clear hardware/resource health MIB: it lets an administrator monitor how heavily DSP channels are loaded and detect a VPM approaching its maximum channel capacity, which would cause new voice calls to fail. It depends on the device's physical entity indexing (h3cVPMEnPhysicalIndex) to correlate a DSP/VPM to a physical slot, tying it to the standard ENTITY-MIB model. It is deployed on H3C voice-gateway-capable routers/switches handling VoIP or TDM-to-IP voice trunking. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the A3COM-HUAWEI-DSP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM-HUAWEI-DSP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C (3Com/Huawei) voice-gateway router/switch with DSP/VPM modules

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll h3cVPMResourceUtilization and h3cVPMHiWaterUtilization in h3cVPMStatusTable to see current and peak DSP channel usage against h3cVPMMaxChannel, revealing when a voice module is nearing capacity. h3cVPMState would be checked to confirm the voice processing module is operationally up rather than failed or disabled. h3cDSPStatusTable's h3cDSPTrap object surfaces DSP-level fault events, such as a specific DSP chip going out of service, that would explain localized call-quality or call-failure issues.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DSP/VPM operational state
  • DSP resource utilization percentage
  • high-water-mark utilization
  • maximum voice channel capacity
  • DSP fault trap events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using h3cVPMState OID:

Select an H3C voice gateway as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type h3cVPMState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The object indicates the current state of VPM card being monitored. normal(1) - VPM card in normal condition. warning(2) - VPM card has some problem and need attention. fatal(3) - VPM card is not functional. offLine(4) - VPM card is in off-line. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'normal', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
