What Is ZYXEL-LOOPGUARD-MIB?
ZYXEL-LOOPGUARD-MIB is a ZyXEL private enterprise MIB for the Loop Guard feature, which detects and blocks unidirectional link conditions that can cause bridging loops and broadcast storms, placing it in the switching/spanning-tree protection category. It exposes per-port enable/disable state for loop guard and the resulting operational status, such as normal versus loop-detected/blocking, rather than performance counters or environmental sensors. Its key monitoring role is a fault/protection-status one: it tells an administrator whether a port has been shut down or put into a blocking state because loop guard detected a unidirectional link fault, which is a direct hardware/software fault indicator for the switch's forwarding health. It is closely tied to the switch's Spanning Tree implementation since loop guard acts as a supplement to STP/RSTP on ports that don't reliably receive BPDUs. It is typically deployed on ZyXEL access switches at the network edge where uplink or trunk ports are prone to unidirectional fiber or media faults that standard STP cannot always catch quickly, and administrators can complete a ZYXEL-LOOPGUARD-MIB download to load it into their monitoring platform.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-LOOPGUARD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ZyXEL managed Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll the per-port loop-guard enabled flag and its current state to see whether any port has transitioned into a loop-guard-blocking condition. A port unexpectedly reported in the blocking state indicates loop guard has detected a unidirectional link problem, such as a one-way fiber break, and has proactively disabled forwarding on that port to prevent a loop, which should trigger a physical-layer inspection. Because this MIB has no listed sample objects, the main runtime signal an admin gets from it is this per-port protection-state transition rather than traffic statistics.
What Can Be Monitored
- loop guard enabled/disabled per port
- loop guard blocking state
- ports with detected unidirectional link faults
