Description: Manages ZyXEL external alarm input contacts for monitoring environmental and physical facility conditions.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ZYXEL-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB?
This MIB belongs to the ZyXEL device family and covers external alarm input contacts, a feature that lets the switch monitor physical/environmental conditions outside the device itself via dry-contact alarm inputs (e.g., door open, water detection, or third-party sensor triggers). It exposes configuration and status objects for each alarm input, including whether the contact is currently in a triggered or normal state and possibly a description/label for what the contact monitors. This is explicitly a hardware/environmental fault-monitoring MIB: it lets facility or network operations staff detect physical conditions such as an open cabinet door, temperature threshold, or intrusion sensor trip that could put networking equipment at risk. It typically depends on the device's general alarm/notification infrastructure to convert a triggered contact into an SNMP trap. It is commonly deployed in remote equipment closets or outdoor cabinets using ZyXEL switches, where external alarm inputs provide low-cost environmental/physical security monitoring alongside network management. Engineers can download the ZYXEL-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ZyXEL switch with external alarm input ports
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the external alarm status table to check whether any configured alarm input is currently in a triggered state versus its normal/inactive state. A contact that flips to triggered—such as one wired to a cabinet door switch—indicates unauthorized physical access or an environmental event that warrants an immediate site check. Because these inputs are user-labeled, cross-referencing the alarm description with the triggered status quickly tells the operator which specific physical condition caused the alert.
What Can Be Monitored
- external alarm contact status (triggered/normal)
- alarm input description/label
- physical/environmental fault events
