What Is VENDOR-COMMON-MIB?

VENDOR-COMMON-MIB is a shared, generic base module that defines common object structures, textual conventions, or import points reused across multiple vendor-specific MIBs rather than modeling a single product. It has no module description or sample objects of its own, indicating it functions purely as an infrastructure/import MIB rather than exposing directly-polled configuration or status data. Because it defines no runtime objects, it is not itself used to monitor hardware or software status, its role is structural, supplying common definitions that dependent vendor MIBs build on for their own hardware/software monitoring objects. Any MIB built on it inherently depends on it for compilation. It would appear in an MIB repository as a support/import module referenced by other vendor-specific MIB files, functioning more as a VENDOR-COMMON-MIB reference than as a standalone monitored entity.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VENDOR-COMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • generic network/telecom equipment (via dependent vendor MIBs)

Monitoring Examples

This module has no sample objects and an essentially empty module description, so it appears to be a bare common/base MIB providing shared definitions for other vendor MIBs to import; there is no realistic runtime monitoring scenario to describe for it directly.

RFC description

Defines common vendor MIB textual conventions for device status, operations, and data direction management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, generic network/telecom equipment via dependent vendor MIBs (shared textual conventions, no data objects) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
