Description: The maximum number of additional encapsulations permitted for packets undergoing encapsulation at this node. A value of -1 indicates that no limit is present (except as a result of the packet size).

What is tunnelIfEncapsLimit?

This read-write value sets the maximum number of additional encapsulations permitted for packets undergoing encapsulation at this tunnel, per RFC 2473; a value of -1 means no such limit is enforced beyond what packet size naturally allows. Admins tune it to prevent excessive nested tunnel encapsulation, which can otherwise cause fragmentation or looping issues in complex tunneled topologies. For example, setting this to 4 caps how many further layers of tunneling can be applied to packets already encapsulated by this tunnel before they'd be dropped, guarding against runaway nested encapsulation.
