Category: Security and Encryption

Description: Provides Transport Security Model extension objects for SNMP v3 TLS and DTLS transport security.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TSMEXT-MIB?

TSMEXT-MIB defines Transport Security Model (TSM) extension objects for SNMPv3, adding management support for TLS and DTLS-based transport security as an extension to the standard SNMP security framework. Rather than exposing device hardware or application data, it models SNMP-engine-level configuration such as certificate/fingerprint mappings and transport security session parameters used to authenticate and encrypt SNMP traffic itself. Its 'monitoring' value is indirect: it helps confirm that the SNMP transport layer's TLS/DTLS security is correctly configured and operating, rather than reporting on device CPU, memory, or environmental status. It has an explicit dependency on the IETF Transport Security Model (RFC 6353) and the broader SNMPv3 USM/VACM security architecture that it extends. It is deployed on any SNMP agent that has been configured to use TLS or DTLS transport security, typically in security-hardened network management environments, where the TSMEXT-MIB RFC underpins the certificate-mapping objects used to secure those sessions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TSMEXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMP agent using TLS/DTLS transport security

Monitoring Examples

With only an 'IMPORTS' clause given as a sample object, no concrete runtime tables can be cited from the source data. In practice a MIB of this kind would expose objects mapping SNMP transport security identities to X.509 certificate fingerprints, which an operator would poll to verify that only expected certificates are authorized for secure SNMP sessions. This remains a general description since the batch provided no actual object names beyond the IMPORTS clause.

What Can Be Monitored

  • TLS/DTLS transport security configuration
  • certificate-to-identity mapping
