Category: Environment and Power

Description: Manages Tiara Networks WAN router environmental sensors, temperature, and power status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TIARA-NETWORKS-ENVIRONMENT-MIB?

TIARA-NETWORKS-ENVIRONMENT-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Tiara Networks WAN routers that monitors the chassis's physical environmental subsystems: temperature sensors, cooling fans, and power supplies. It exposes per-unit temperature sensor readings and state, per-unit fan operational state, and power-supply fail counts, which are the classic building blocks of environmental hardware health monitoring. Its entire purpose is hardware status: envTempSensorValue/envTempSensorState flag over-temperature conditions, envFanState reveals a failed or degraded cooling fan, and envPwrsupPowerFailCount tracks power-supply failure events over time, together giving an operator direct visibility into whether the chassis is at risk of thermal or power-related failure. It is a self-contained environmental extension to the broader Tiara router MIB family and does not depend on external standard environmental MIBs based on the available data. It is deployed on Tiara routers in the field where an NMS polls temperature, fan, and power-supply health as part of routine hardware monitoring, often paired with the module's own notification objects for immediate alerting. Engineers can download the TIARA-NETWORKS-ENVIRONMENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIARA-NETWORKS-ENVIRONMENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Tiara Networks WAN router chassis

Monitoring Examples

An operator would walk envTempSensorTable using envTempSensorUnitIndex to read envTempSensorValue and envTempSensorState, catching a chassis component that has drifted into an over-temperature warning state. envFanTable's envFanState per envFanUnitIndex would reveal whether a specific cooling fan has failed or is running abnormally, a leading indicator of an eventual thermal shutdown if unaddressed. envPwrsupPowerFailCount climbing over time on envPwrsupTable would flag a flaky or failing power supply that merits physical replacement, and envNotifications would fire to alert the NMS in real time when any of these conditions cross into an alarm state.

What Can Be Monitored

  • temperature sensor reading and state per unit
  • cooling fan operational state per unit
  • power supply failure count
  • environmental alarm notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using envTempSensorValue OID:

Select a Tiara Networks WAN router chassis (temperature/fan/power-supply status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type envTempSensorValue into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The current value of the temperature sensor. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
