Category: Network Monitoring
Description: Provides traffic statistics counters for interface-level packet, byte, and error measurements.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is STATISTICS-MIB?
STATISTICS-MIB is a general traffic-statistics MIB providing interface-level counters for packets, bytes, and errors, used to quantify network traffic and fault conditions at the interface level. It exposes performance-counter data that complements basic interface status with volume and error-rate detail. In terms of device monitoring, this is fundamentally software/network performance monitoring: tracking packet and byte counts reveals traffic load and utilization trends on an interface, while error and discard counters reveal a degrading physical link, a duplex mismatch, or congestion before it causes a service-affecting outage. It most likely complements the standard IF-MIB's ifTable/ifXTable counters, extending or duplicating similar statistics in a vendor- or context-specific way, though the exact vendor context is not indicated by the available module text. It is deployed on general network devices such as switches and routers wherever administrators rely on STATISTICS-MIB SNMP monitoring for interface-level traffic and error statistics supporting capacity planning and fault detection.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in STATISTICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- HP ProCurve/Aruba managed switch (hpSwitch IPX/statistics extension)
Monitoring Examples
No specific object or table names were available for this module, so a concrete polling scenario cannot be grounded in real identifiers; conceptually, though, an administrator would poll interface packet, byte, and error counters over time to detect a rising error or discard rate on a specific interface, revealing a failing cable, duplex mismatch, or congestion point.
What Can Be Monitored
- interface packet counts (in/out)
- interface byte counts
- interface error counts
- interface discard counts

A disabled state indicates the port does not have a link beat. An initial state indicates the port has recently established a link beat and is detecting whether or not it is in the load balancing domain. A notEstablished state indicates that the port is outside the load balancing domain, not directly connected to a load balancing port, and learning MAC address by receiving unknown source address packets. An error state indicates the port has detected a direct connection to more than one load balancing port and is blocked, only accepting load balancing protocol packets. When the error condition clears, the port transitions either into the established or not established state. |

RFC description
Provides operational statistics for HP ProCurve switches including IPX and VLAN-level status metrics.
Start monitoring HP ProCurve/Aruba managed switch (per-VLAN IPX/interface statistics) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
