Category: SNMP Framework

Description: Defines the SNMP transport mapping for IEEE 802 networks, allowing SNMP messages to be transmitted directly over IEEE 802 LANs.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring SNMP-IEEE802-TM-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is SNMP-IEEE802-TM-MIB?

This is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 4789) that defines the SNMP-over-IEEE-802 transport mapping, standardizing how SNMP messages can be carried directly over IEEE 802 LAN media instead of over UDP/IP. It belongs to the small family of SNMP transport-mapping MIBs (alongside SNMPv2-TM) that exist purely to define OID assignments and textual conventions, not to expose management data about a running device. Because it only defines a transport domain identifier and an address textual convention, there is no hardware, software, performance, or fault data exposed by this module at all. It depends on and extends the SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-TM framework conventions for how transport domains and addresses are represented in SNMP. In practice it is referenced implicitly by SNMP agent/manager implementations that need to communicate over raw IEEE 802 media rather than being a MIB an operator would browse or poll. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SNMP-IEEE802-TM-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-IEEE802-TM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMP agent/manager using IEEE 802 transport addressing

Monitoring Examples

This module defines a transport domain object identifier and a textual convention for IEEE 802 MAC-address-based transport addresses; it does not define any tables or scalar objects carrying runtime status data, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe here beyond noting that it exists purely to standardize OIDs referenced by SNMP transport implementations.
