Description: Manages fast VRRP sub-second failover timers and state tracking on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-FAST-VRRP-MIB?
RBN-FAST-VRRP-MIB is a Redback Networks/Ericsson SmartEdge MIB for managing Fast VRRP (FVRRP), a Redback enhancement to the standard Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol that provides sub-second failover timers for router redundancy groups. It exposes operational data about VRRP router instances, including virtual router ID and advertisement interval, used to confirm redundancy groups are configured and running with the expected fast-failover timing. Its monitoring role centers on software/protocol operational status: confirming which router is currently master versus backup for a virtual router ID, that advertisement timers are set correctly, and that fast failover would trigger promptly on a failure. It is a vendor-specific enhancement layered on top of the standard IETF VRRP-MIB (RFC 2787) and its v3 successor, from which it borrows core concepts while shortening timer granularity. It is deployed on pairs (or groups) of Ericsson SmartEdge/SSR routers providing first-hop gateway redundancy in carrier or enterprise edge networks. Engineers can download the RBN-FAST-VRRP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-FAST-VRRP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
- Ericsson Smart Service Router (SSR)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rbnFastVrrpOperTable/rbnFastVrrpOperEntry, keyed by rbnFastVrrpOperVrId, to confirm the virtual router's current operational state and that rbnFastVrrpOperAdvertisementInterval is set to the expected sub-second value for fast failover. If two routers in a redundancy pair both report the same VRRP role, or the advertisement interval differs between them, that would reveal a misconfiguration risking a split-brain or slow-failover condition. Objects under rbnFastVrrpMIBObjects, scoped by rbnFastVrrpMIBGroups/rbnFastVrrpMIBCompliances, define what a compliant agent must expose for FVRRP status monitoring.
What Can Be Monitored
- VRRP virtual router operational state
- VRRP advertisement interval
- master/backup role per virtual router ID
