Category: VLAN Management

Description: Manages D-Link IEEE 802.1ad Q-in-Q provider bridge VLAN stacking configuration, S-VLAN port mode, and tag translation.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Q-IN-Q-MIB?

This is a D-Link proprietary MIB that manages IEEE 802.1ad Q-in-Q (provider-bridge/VLAN-stacking) configuration on D-Link switches, controlling how an outer service-provider VLAN tag encapsulates customer traffic. Its data category is Layer-2 VLAN configuration — global Q-in-Q enable state, per-port role (e.g., uplink/access), and the TPID (tag protocol identifier) used for the outer tag. It is used to monitor the software configuration status of the switch's VLAN-stacking feature — confirming whether Q-in-Q is globally enabled (swQinQState) and whether each port's role and TPID (swQinQPortRole/swQinQPortTpid) are set as intended, which is critical to diagnosing traffic that isn't being tagged/detagged correctly at a provider-bridge boundary. It builds on the IEEE 802.1ad/802.1Q standards for VLAN tagging and complements the standard Q-BRIDGE-MIB used for ordinary VLAN management. It is deployed on D-Link managed switches used as provider-bridge or metro-Ethernet access devices where multiple customer VLANs need to be transported transparently inside a single service-provider VLAN. Engineers searching for 802.1qinq configuration use this MIB to confirm double-VLAN-tagging (Q-in-Q) is correctly applied on a D-Link switch port.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Q-IN-Q-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link managed switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin checks swQinQState to confirm Q-in-Q is enabled switch-wide, then walks swQinQPortTable/swQinQPortEntry (keyed by swQinQPortIndex) to verify each port's swQinQPortRole (e.g., configured as a provider "uplink" vs. customer "access" port) and its swQinQPortTpid value. A port showing the wrong role or a non-standard TPID would explain why double-tagged frames are being dropped or mishandled at that port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Q-in-Q global enable state
  • per-port Q-in-Q role
  • per-port TPID configuration
