pimInvalidJoinPrune

Module: PIM-STD-MIB

OID (symbolic): PIM-STD-MIB::pimInvalidJoinPrune

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.2.1.157.0.3

Node type: NOTIFICATION-TYPE

Description: A pimInvalidJoinPrune notification signifies that an invalid PIM Join/Prune message was received by this device.

This notification is generated whenever the counter pimInvalidJoinPruneMsgsRcvd is incremented, subject to the rate limit specified by pimInvalidJoinPruneNotificationPeriod.

What is pimInvalidJoinPrune?

This notification object signals that a router has received an invalid PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) Join/Prune message that does not match its configured multicast group-to-RP mappings. The invalid message is discarded to prevent configuration inconsistencies from disrupting multicast distribution. An operator would use this notification to detect multicast configuration mismatches across the network and identify devices operating with conflicting RP mappings.

Examples

Send this trap to an SNMP manager — replace <manager> with the IP or hostname of your monitoring server (SNMPv2c):

snmptrap -v2c -c public <manager> '' PIM-STD-MIB::pimInvalidJoinPrune
snmptrap -v2c -c public <manager> '' 1.3.6.1.2.1.157.0.3

Listen for incoming traps on the manager host (-f keeps it in the foreground, -Lo prints to stdout — useful for testing):

snmptrapd -f -Lo -c /dev/null authCommunity log public

Example snmptrapd log entry:

zoo11-linux.zoo [UDP: [192.168.30.111]:56304->[192.168.30.10]:162]:
  DISMAN-EVENT-MIB::sysUpTimeInstance = Timeticks: (369322480) 42 days, 17:53:44.80
  SNMPv2-MIB::snmpTrapOID.0 = OID: PIM-STD-MIB::pimInvalidJoinPrune

SNMPv3 example:

snmptrap -v3 -l authPriv -u snmpv3user -a SHA -A "AuthPass1" -x AES -X "PrivPass1" <manager> '' PIM-STD-MIB::pimInvalidJoinPrune
