Category: QoS

Description: Manages IEEE 802.1Qbb Priority Flow Control (PFC) per-priority pause configuration and pause-frame counters on DCB Ethernet ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PFC-MIB?

PFC-MIB implements management objects for IEEE 802.1Qbb Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) on Data Center Bridging (DCB) Ethernet ports, a lossless-Ethernet feature used to pause traffic per priority class rather than the whole link. Based on its module description and single referenced group, it exposes configuration objects for enabling and tuning PFC per priority on switch ports, and in a fuller implementation would also include per-priority pause-frame transmit/receive counters. It is used to monitor the software/configuration status of PFC on DCB-capable Ethernet interfaces, such as which priorities have PFC enabled, which helps diagnose head-of-line blocking or unexpected pausing in converged storage/data-center-bridging fabrics. It directly depends on and extends concepts from the IEEE 802.1Qbb standard and typically coexists with related DCB MIBs (e.g., ETS/DCBX MIBs) on the same platform. It is deployed on data center switches supporting Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) or other lossless-Ethernet DCB fabrics. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the PFC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PFC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • data center bridging (DCB) Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would inspect the agentPfcCfgGroup configuration objects to verify which priority classes have PFC enabled on a given switch port, confirming alignment with the intended lossless-traffic classes (e.g., FCoE storage traffic). If a converged network experiences unexpected latency spikes, checking whether PFC is enabled on the wrong priority via this group can reveal a misconfiguration causing head-of-line blocking. Because only one object group is listed in the sample objects, per-priority pause-frame counters are not confirmed as present in this particular module revision.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-priority PFC enable/disable configuration
