Module: PDN-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB

OID (symbolic): PDN-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB::pdnDot1dBasePortUnknownMulticastForwardingMode

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.1795.2.24.2.58.1.1.1.3

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: INTEGER

Access: read-write

Description: Configures the layer 2 unknown multicast forwarding mode. A layer 2 frame is `unknown' if there is no entry in the Forwarding Database which identifies the set of ports to forward the multicast frame on. When set to `flood(1)', the `unknown' multicast frame will be forwarded on all bridge ports. When set to `drop(2)', the `unknown' multicast frame will be dropped and not be forwarded on any bridge port.

What is pdnDot1dBasePortUnknownMulticastForwardingMode?

This read-write enumeration controls how the bridge port handles multicast frames whose destination isn't in the forwarding database: flood(1) sends them out all bridge ports, while drop(2) discards them. An admin sets this to control unnecessary multicast flooding across subscriber-facing ports, trading bandwidth efficiency against the risk of dropping legitimate but not-yet-learned multicast streams. On a DSLAM with hundreds of subscriber ports, setting this to drop(2) prevents an unrecognized IPTV multicast group from being blasted out every port.
