What Is NWAYSMSS-MIB?
NWAYSMSS-MIB is an IBM enterprise MIB module supporting the N-Ways family of multi-speed Ethernet switching hubs, a line of stackable workgroup switches sold in the 1990s. It organizes management data under an IBM product OID branch covering common hardware vendor product data (VPD), server module identification, and per-port Ethernet configuration and statistics for the switching backplane. Administrators use it to monitor hardware presence and identity (module/server VPD such as serial numbers, part numbers, hardware revision) as well as port-level Ethernet traffic counters and link state across the switch's multi-speed ports, giving visibility into both the physical hardware inventory and the operational health of individual ports. It builds on the standard MIB-II/Ethernet-like interface conventions for its counter semantics even though it defines its own IBM-specific object tree. Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll objects under mssCommonHWVPD to confirm the chassis serial number and firmware/hardware revision match inventory records, and check mssCmnSrvrs to see which server/management modules are currently installed and active in the hub. Combined with per-port Ethernet statistics exposed under the nwaysMSS tree, a sudden spike in port error counters alongside a VPD mismatch could indicate a failing or swapped module. Because sample_objects here are mostly top-level registration nodes (nwaysMSS, ibm, ibmProd, mssCommon), the deeper per-port counter tables are inferred from the module's stated purpose rather than directly enumerated.
