All MIBs › NORTEL-OPTICAL-GENERIC-MIB
Organization: Nortel
Last Updated: 2008-02-07
Category: Nortel Optical
Description: Provides generic alarm and inventory objects common to Nortel optical transport network elements.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NORTEL-OPTICAL-GENERIC-MIB?
NORTEL-OPTICAL-GENERIC-MIB is the top-level, common MIB branch shared across Nortel's optical transport network element product families (including the OPTera Metro line). It does not define instrumentation itself but provides the shared object identifier subtree from which product-specific alarm and inventory MIBs for individual optical platforms descend. As a generic umbrella module it enables consistent hardware/software status monitoring across the Nortel optical portfolio once the product-specific child MIBs are loaded, covering things like card inventory, alarm severity, and equipment state in those dependent modules. It is explicitly a prerequisite dependency for other Nortel optical MIBs such as those under the opterametro branch. This module is used in carrier and enterprise optical transport networks running Nortel/Ciena-heritage DWDM and SONET/SDH transmission equipment. Engineers can download the NORTEL-OPTICAL-GENERIC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NORTEL-OPTICAL-GENERIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nortel optical transport network element (e.g. OPTera Metro platform)
Monitoring Examples
The only sample object present, opterametro, is an OID branch identifier rather than a monitorable data object, so there is no runtime polling scenario within this module itself. Administrators load this generic MIB so that MIB compilers and NMS platforms can resolve the parent OID tree referenced by the actual instrumentation defined in product-specific Nortel Optical MIBs.
