This per-interface value reports the physical or logical port type -- such as Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, EPON, EPON LLID, or a port-channel -- for VLAN configuration purposes. Admins use it to distinguish which kind of interface they are looking at in the VLAN port table before applying type-specific VLAN settings, since not all VLAN options are meaningful on every port type. For example, an aggregated uplink would report portchannel(11), telling the admin that VLAN settings applied here affect the whole LAG rather than a single physical port.
