Description: Provides NMS Communications EPON ONU remote reset control and reboot scheduling via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NMS-EPON-ONU-RESET?

NMS-EPON-ONU-RESET is a vendor-specific control MIB from NMS Communications that provides remote reset and reboot-scheduling capability for EPON Optical Network Units (ONUs) via SNMP, allowing an operator to remotely power-cycle subscriber-side optical terminals without a truck roll. It exposes primarily action/control objects, a reset trigger and scheduling parameters for when a reset should occur, rather than continuous telemetry, making it a device-control MIB used in direct support of restoring software/hardware operation on a stuck or misbehaving ONU. Its monitoring relevance is centered on confirming a remediation action succeeded: after issuing a reset, an operator checks the ONU's subsequent registration/uptime status (via companion EPON MIBs) to confirm the unit rebooted and came back online cleanly. It depends functionally on the broader EPON OLT/ONU management MIB set (such as the OLT multicast VLAN MIB and serial trap MIB in the same family) for the surrounding ONU state context. It is deployed by broadband operators running EPON fiber access networks, used by NOC staff or automated systems to remotely recover unresponsive ONUs. Engineers can download the NMS-EPON-ONU-RESET file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-EPON-ONU-RESET. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NMS Communications EPON Optical Network Unit (ONU)

Monitoring Examples

When a subscriber reports a completely unresponsive ONU, an operator would issue the reset control object for that ONU's identifier to trigger a remote reboot, then poll the device's registration status afterward to confirm it re-registered with the OLT. A reset-scheduling object would be used to queue a reboot for a maintenance window rather than an immediate disruptive reset during business hours. If the ONU fails to come back online after the reset, that would escalate the issue from a software hang to a suspected hardware fault requiring a physical truck roll.

What Can Be Monitored

  • remote reset trigger status
  • scheduled reboot time
  • ONU reset/reboot outcome
  • post-reset registration status
