Category: Device Management, Vendor: H3C/HH3C

Description: H3C MIB for managing virtual device contexts (VDCs) enabling logical device partitioning on physical hardware.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is H3C-CONTEXT-MIB?

H3C-CONTEXT-MIB is an H3C private-enterprise MIB for managing virtual device contexts (VDCs), a logical-partitioning feature that lets a single physical H3C chassis be carved into multiple independent virtual devices. It exposes context configuration data, including the index and name of each defined context and the tables mapped to it, plus objects supporting context-related event notifications. Its monitoring value is primarily configuration/inventory visibility (confirming which virtual contexts exist and are correctly named) combined with fault notification when a context's state changes, rather than granular counters. It builds conceptually on standard chassis/entity management concepts (as in ENTITY-MIB), since each context maps onto shared physical chassis resources. Deployment context is modular H3C core switches/routers in data-center or service-provider environments that use device virtualization to run multiple logical devices on one physical chassis, and the H3C-CONTEXT-MIB download lets administrators load the module directly into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H3C-CONTEXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C modular switch/router with virtual device context (VDC) support

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls h3cContextControlTable/h3cContextControlEntry to enumerate all defined virtual contexts by h3cContextIndex and h3cContextName, verifying that every expected virtual device is present and correctly labeled. Traps under h3cContextNotification, carrying detail from h3cContextNotificationObjects, alert the operator when a context is created, deleted, or experiences a fault, which is critical in a shared-hardware virtualized deployment where one context's failure should not be confused with a full chassis outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual context index and name
  • context-to-table mappings
  • context creation/deletion/fault events
