Description: Geist Intelligent Module Device MIB for monitoring data center environmental sensors including temperature and humidity.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GEIST-IMD-MIB?

GEIST-IMD-MIB is a vendor MIB from Geist (a data center power/environmental monitoring vendor) covering its Intelligent Module Device (IMD) product line, including environmental sensor units and Geist PDUs such as the Blackbird family. It exposes product identification (title, version, friendly name, MAC address, URL), a deviceCount of attached sensor modules, temperatureUnits configuration, and a pduMainTable with per-PDU serial number and status. This MIB is explicitly for monitoring environmental and power hardware status in a data center: it is used to track temperature (and by extension humidity, on models with combined sensors) readings from attached environmental probes, verify PDU identity/serial number, and confirm the expected number of sensor modules are present and reporting. As a Geist private-enterprise MIB it does not declare a dependency on other IETF MIBs, though it is often deployed alongside standard PDU/UPS MIBs in the same rack. It is deployed in data center and telecom equipment rooms where Geist IMD sensors and PDUs monitor rack-level temperature, humidity, and power conditions. Engineers can download the GEIST-IMD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GEIST-IMD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Geist Intelligent Module Device (IMD) environmental sensor
  • Geist Blackbird PDU

Monitoring Examples

A facilities monitoring system would poll deviceCount to confirm all expected Geist environmental sensor modules are still attached and reporting, and would read temperature values (interpreted per temperatureUnits) from the sensor objects to catch a rack overheating condition. Querying pduMainTable by pduMainIndex and checking pduMainSerial confirms which physical PDU unit is being monitored, useful for correlating an alarm back to a specific rack when multiple Geist units are deployed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • temperature readings
  • humidity readings (where sensor equipped)
  • attached sensor module count
  • PDU identity and serial number
  • product firmware/version information

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using pduMainAvail OID:

Select a Geist Intelligent Module Device (IMD) environmental sensor / Blackbird PDU as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type pduMainAvail into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the device availability. 0 = Unavailable, 1 = Available, 2 = Partially Unavailable. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
