What Is Fore-frf5-MIB?

This MIB, from Fore Systems (later Marconi), manages Frame Relay/ATM Network Interworking per the FRF.5 implementation agreement on ForeRunner ATM switches, enabling creation and monitoring of FR-to-ATM interworking connections. It exposes a connection table mapping Frame Relay service/DLCI parameters to ATM interface/VPI/VCI values, along with per-connection provisioning profiles and row-status control. From a monitoring standpoint it is primarily a connection-status and configuration MIB: frf5ConnRowStatus lets an operator confirm whether each interworking connection is active, which reveals connectivity failures at the FR/ATM boundary rather than device hardware health. It implements the ATM Forum's FRF.5 standard and depends on underlying Frame Relay and ATM interface indexing conventions for its cross-references. Typically deployed on Fore Systems ATM switches acting as Frame Relay/ATM interworking gateways in carrier or enterprise WAN cores. An administrator would poll frf5ConnTable/frf5ConnEntry to inspect each interworking connection, correlating frf5ConnFrServiceIfIndex and frf5ConnDlci (the Frame Relay side) with frf5ConnFabAtmIf, frf5ConnFabVpi, and frf5ConnFabVci (the ATM side) to verify correct DLCI-to-VPI/VCI mapping. Checking frf5ConnRowStatus reveals whether a given connection is active, not-in-service, or failed, explaining a customer-reported loss of connectivity across the FR/ATM boundary, while frf5ConnProfileEpdPpdIndex indicates which discard-policy profile is applied when diagnosing congestion-related frame loss.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using frf5extDlcmiRxAbortedFrames OID:

Select a Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switch (FRF.5 Frame Relay/ATM interworking) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type frf5extDlcmiRxAbortedFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of aborted frames received on this Frame Relay logical interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
