Description: Extended DOT MIB version 2 providing enhanced management objects for Ethernet interface statistics and configuration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is EDOT-MIB2?
This is the Extended Discovery Object Table (DOT) MIB version 2, part of the "sunsymon" (SunNet Manager) family of enterprise MIBs, used for network topology discovery and object modeling within SunNet Manager-style management platforms and other vendors (Cabletron among them) that adopted this discovery scheme. It exposes a discovery object table that models arbitrary discovered network elements, capturing each object's unique ID, parent in the topology tree, composite type, IP address, agent port, node object type, label, and description. Rather than raw hardware sensors, this MIB is used to build and monitor a network topology inventory: an operator would use it to confirm a device or sub-component is correctly discovered, correctly parented under its topology parent, and correctly identified with its label/description, which matters for verifying the health of the topology-discovery/inventory process itself. It underlies or is referenced by other SunNet Manager-family MIBs that layer additional element-specific management on top of this generic discovery model. It is typically deployed in legacy SunNet Manager or Cabletron SPECTRUM-style network management environments performing automated topology discovery. Engineers can download the EDOT-MIB2 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EDOT-MIB2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral topology-discovery MIB (SunNet Manager/Cabletron SPECTRUM family), applicable to any SNMP-managed network element modeled in the discovered topology
Monitoring Examples
An operator verifying topology discovery would walk edotdiscoveryObjectTable/edotdiscoveryObjectTableEntry, checking dotuniqueID and dottopologyparent to confirm a device is correctly placed in the discovered topology tree, and dotlabel/dotdescription to confirm it is correctly identified. dotipaddress and dotagentport would be checked to confirm the discovered element's management address and SNMP agent port are correct. A device missing from this table, or showing an incorrect dottopologyparent, would indicate a topology discovery failure.
What Can Be Monitored
- discovered object unique ID
- topology parent relationship
- object composite type/node type
- IP address and agent port
- object label and description
