diffServAlgRandomDropPkts

Module: DIFFSERV-MIB

OID (symbolic): DIFFSERV-MIB::diffServAlgRandomDropPkts

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.2.1.97.1.6.2.1.10

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter64

Access: read-only

Description:

The number of packets that have been randomly dropped by this drop process. This counter applies, therefore, only to random droppers.

Discontinuities in the value of this counter can occur at re- initialization of the management system and at other times as indicated by the value of ifCounterDiscontinuityTime on the relevant interface.

What is diffServAlgRandomDropPkts?

This OID holds a counter tracking the total number of packets intentionally discarded by random drop algorithms (congestion management technique that probabilistically drops packets). The counter increases when the network is congested and the system needs to reduce traffic. An operator watching this counter spike would recognize that network congestion is occurring and needs investigation.
