Description: Sets the cost of transmitting a packet on the network segment connected to the router port for which the entry exists. The DECnet Phase IV distance-vector-based routing protocol picks the route with the least total nwDecIVProtoIfXmitCost as the best route. If nwDecIVProtocolIfXmitCost, also known as path cost, is the same for all possible routes , the best route chosen is the route with the least number of hops is chosen as the best route.

What is nwDecIVProtoIfXmitCost?

nwDecIVProtoIfXmitCost is a read-write integer setting the cost of transmitting a packet on the network segment attached to this router port, with the DECnet Phase IV distance-vector-based routing protocol picking the route with the lowest total cost, and hop count as a tiebreaker among equal-cost routes. An admin raises this value on a slower or less desirable link to steer DECnet traffic toward better paths, or lowers it to make this port's link the preferred route. For example, setting a high nwDecIVProtoIfXmitCost on a backup satellite link keeps the routing protocol from preferring that path unless the primary route becomes unavailable.
