ctAliasProtocolAddressInterface

Module: CTRON-ALIAS-MIB

OID (symbolic): CTRON-ALIAS-MIB::ctAliasProtocolAddressInterface

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.4.1.3.7.1.1.6.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: InterfaceIndex

Access: read-only

Description: The ifIndex of the interface on which this entry was discovered.

The ifIndex is an 'external value' that identifies a physical component associated with the Alias entry. This object can be used to identify the physical location of the interface in the ifTable [RFC2863].

The possibility of ifIndex value re-assignment must be accommodated by a management application whenever the value of sysUpTime is reset to zero.

Since ifIndex values in different 'naming scopes' are not related to one another, the interface to physical component associations are relative to the same logical entity within the agent. For more discussion of naming scopes, see the ENTITY-MIB [RFC2037]

What is ctAliasProtocolAddressInterface?

This is the ifIndex of the interface on which this alias entry was discovered, as recorded in the table keyed by protocol type and address rather than by alias ID or MAC. It lets an admin who already knows a host's protocol address (e.g., its IP) look up directly which physical port that address was learned on. For example, given a known IP address causing trouble, an admin can query this protocol-address-indexed table's ctAliasProtocolAddressInterface to find the exact port without needing to know the MAC first.
