ctAliasMacAddressInterface

Module: CTRON-ALIAS-MIB

OID (symbolic): CTRON-ALIAS-MIB::ctAliasMacAddressInterface

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.4.1.3.7.1.1.5.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: InterfaceIndex

Access: read-only

Description: The ifIndex of the interface on which this entry was discovered.

The ifIndex is an 'external value' that identifies a physical component associated with the Alias entry. This object can be used to identify the physical location of the interface in the ifTable [RFC2863].

The possibility of ifIndex value re-assignment must be accommodated by a management application whenever the value of sysUpTime is reset to zero.

Since ifIndex values in different 'naming scopes' are not related to one another, the interface to physical component associations are relative to the same logical entity within the agent. For more discussion of naming scopes, see the ENTITY-MIB [RFC2037]

What is ctAliasMacAddressInterface?

This is the ifIndex of the physical interface on which this particular MAC-address-keyed alias entry was discovered, mirroring the alias's location in the standard ifTable. Since this table is organized by MAC address rather than by alias ID, it lets an admin look up 'which port is this MAC on' directly by MAC address instead of scanning the whole alias table. For example, given a suspicious MAC address from a security log, an admin can query this table's ctAliasMacAddressInterface entry to immediately learn which switch port that address was last seen on.
