contTypeDevice

Module: CT-CONTAINER-MIB

OID (symbolic): CT-CONTAINER-MIB::contTypeDevice

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.4.1.1.9.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: OBJECT IDENTIFIER

Access: read-only

Description: Identifies the type of device or container. This could be a chassis, module, a standalone box etc. A vendor's authoritative identification of this device or container. By convention, this value is allocated within the SMI enterprises subtree(1.3.6.1.4.1), and provides an easy and unambiguous means for determining `what kind of box' is being managed. If this information is not present or unknown, its value should be set to the contUnknownTypeID, which is defined below.

What is contTypeDevice?

This object identifier authoritatively identifies what kind of device or container this entry represents, whether a chassis, a module, or a standalone box, registered by the vendor within the SMI enterprises subtree. Admins use this at the very top level of device identification to determine, programmatically, exactly what kind of box a management station is talking to before drilling into more specific MIBs. For example, a management system polling contTypeDevice and matching the returned OID against a vendor's product list would determine it's managing a standalone chassis rather than a single expansion module.
