contTypeContainingDevice

Module: CT-CONTAINER-MIB

OID (symbolic): CT-CONTAINER-MIB::contTypeContainingDevice

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.4.1.1.9.1.6

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: OBJECT IDENTIFIER

Access: read-only

Description: Identifies the type of device or container that this device or containeris installed or contained. A vendor's authoritative identification of this container or device. By convention, this value is allocated within the SMI enterprises subtree(1.3.6.1.4.1), and provides an easy and unambiguous means for determining `what kind of box' . If this information is not present or unknown, its value should be set to the OBJECT IDENTIFIER { 0 0 }, which is a syntactically valid object identifier.

What is contTypeContainingDevice?

This object identifies the type of the enclosing device or container using a vendor-assigned OBJECT IDENTIFIER drawn from the SMI enterprises subtree (1.3.6.1.4.1), giving an unambiguous 'what kind of box' answer. An administrator relies on this to automatically recognize the chassis or shelf a card is sitting in without manually cross-referencing model numbers. For example, polling this OID might return a value that maps to a specific Cabletron chassis model, letting inventory software auto-populate the enclosure type.
