This read-only enumerated value reports whether the Environmental Controller unit itself is failed or ok, as distinct from the sensors and outputs attached to it. It lets an admin tell a controller hardware fault apart from a sensor-level problem, which determines whether the whole EC unit needs to be replaced. For example, seeing failed(1) here while individual sensor statuses still look normal points the admin toward the controller board itself rather than any connected probe.
