rlTargetAddrMagicUsedInIndex

Module: CISCOSB-SNMP-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCOSB-SNMP-MIB::rlTargetAddrMagicUsedInIndex

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.6.1.101.98.1.5.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: OCTET STRING

Access: read-create

Description: Setting this field to a 4 octets length value means that ip mapping (using rlSNMPv3IpAddrToIndexTable) is used for this row. If such a mapping is not used, a 0-length octet string value should be used for this field (this is also the default). This field value is determined only once, upon creation of an entry in the snmpTargetAddrTable. A change in its value while updating an existing entry is ignored. Prior to creating a snmpTargetAddrTable entry with a 4 octets length value for this field, the rlSNMPv3IpAddrToIndexTable must be used in order to retrieve this value.

What is rlTargetAddrMagicUsedInIndex?

This read-create field, when set to a 4-octet value, enables IP-address-based index mapping for an SNMPv3 target address entry, while a zero-length value (the default) disables that mapping, and per the description the choice is locked in at row creation and can't be changed later. Admins care because getting this decision right up front matters, since a target entry's discoverability via IP-address lookup depends entirely on it. For example, an admin sets a 4-octet magic value when first creating a new target address entry so it becomes reachable through IP-based lookup, a choice they cannot revise afterward without recreating the row.
