This Gauge32 value is the local port number that an FC "established" endpoint — one FC-capable interface (uplink, FEX port, or similar) that UCSM has discovered and is tracking on the SAN fabric is associated with. An admin reads portId to know exactly which physical port on this device is in play, which matters once a fabric interconnect has dozens of similar ports. For example, when a specific port reports errors, this field is what lets the admin walk directly to that physical port rather than checking each one in turn.
