This internal/external split is a basic filter admins and monitoring tools use to separate this server-facing port-channel member port from the fabric's uplink-facing objects when building a topology view or scoping a search to just one side of the fabric. A value of 'internal' marks this as chassis-facing plumbing rather than a network-facing uplink; 'external' would place it on the outward-facing side of the fabric.
