For a network admin, this is a milder cousin of excessCollision on the same interface, and a rising trend here can be an early warning of the same duplex or loading problem before it gets bad enough to actually drop frames. For example, a cumulative value of 9 frames since the interface came up would still be within a tolerable range, whereas a rapidly climbing count in the hundreds would justify escalation.
