This gauge counts how many times the fan module's stats record has been refreshed since it was created, effectively a running sample counter for that module's monitoring feed. It's useful to an admin as a sanity check that the chassis management controller is actually still polling this specific fan module and not silently stuck on an old value. A healthy fan module might show an update count climbing by roughly one every collection interval, so a count that stops incrementing while other modules keep counting up points at a problem isolated to that one module.
