Because history records accumulate over time and eventually roll off, this id is what an admin or script uses to sort or dedupe historical samples reliably, independent of the record's dn string. An id that increases monotonically with each new sample lets a monitoring tool detect gaps if, say, id jumps from 500 to 505 with records 501-504 missing.
