Category: Cisco Devices, MPLS and Traffic Engineering, Routing Protocols

Description: Monitors Cisco SD-WAN OMP (Overlay Management Protocol) route advertisements and peer session state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SDWAN-OMP-MIB?

This MIB module is part of Cisco's SD-WAN (Software-Defined WAN) technology, specifically covering the Overlay Management Protocol (OMP) that distributes routing, policy, and security information between vEdge/cEdge routers and vSmart controllers. It exposes data on OMP peer sessions, peer state transitions, vSmart controller counts, and policy status within the SD-WAN overlay fabric. It is used to monitor the operational health of the SD-WAN control plane software—tracking whether OMP peer sessions are up or down, how many vSmart controllers are reachable, and whether policy has been successfully applied—surfacing control-plane software faults rather than hardware sensors. It depends on Cisco's broader SD-WAN MIB family and standard NETCONF notification severity conventions for its trap definitions. Typical deployment is on Cisco SD-WAN (Viptela) edge routers and controllers in enterprise WAN and branch-to-cloud overlay networks, where the CISCO-SDWAN-OMP-MIB MIB is polled to track overlay control-plane health.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SDWAN-OMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco SD-WAN (Viptela) edge router
  • Cisco vSmart controller

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ciscoSdwanOmpPeer and ciscoSdwanOmpPeerNewState to detect when an OMP session to a vSmart controller transitions to a down state, and check ciscoSdwanOmpNumberOfVsmarts to confirm the router still has redundant controller connectivity. The ciscoSdwanOmpVsmartPeer object identifies which vSmart peer is affected, while ciscoSdwanOmpMIBNotifs generates traps (via ciscoSdwanOmpNewState) when overall OMP state changes, alerting on-call staff to a control-plane outage. ciscoSdwanOmpPolicy exposes whether centralized policy has been successfully received and applied from the controller.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OMP peer session state
  • number of reachable vSmart controllers
  • OMP policy application status
  • peer state transitions
  • control-plane notifications
