Description: This object indicates whether or not a T4 external output is squelched.

Squelching is a sychronization function defined to prevent transmission of a timing signal with a quality that is lower than the quality of the clock in the receiving networks element or SASE. It is also used for the prevention of timing loops.

What is cnsExtOutSquelch?

This object indicates whether a specific T4 external output is currently squelched, meaning the device has deliberately suppressed transmission of its timing signal outward, a mechanism used per the description to prevent propagating a lower-quality signal than the receiving equipment already has, and to prevent timing loops. It matters because a squelched output means downstream equipment relying on this device for timing is currently getting nothing at all from this port, not just a degraded signal, which could force that equipment into its own holdover. An admin troubleshooting a downstream device unexpectedly in holdover should check whether this device's corresponding output is squelched, which would explain the downstream loss of reference entirely.
