This selects the Layer 2 protocol used at the circuit's first (source) endpoint from a fixed set -- Ethernet, Frame Relay, ATM, VT (video/voice-related TDM), AX data, AX TDM, or ISL -- and this choice is exactly what determines how circuitSrcConnectionID must be interpreted and constructed. Choosing the wrong protocol here would cause the connection ID field to be misread by the device (for example, treating an ATM VPI/VCI pair as if it were a simple Frame Relay DLCI), breaking circuit setup even if the numeric connection ID itself looks reasonable. For example, setting this to atm(3) tells the device to parse circuitSrcConnectionID as a packed 12-bit VPI plus 16-bit VCI rather than a flat VLAN or DLCI number.
