This notification-only field indicates how the DHCP server detected an address conflict that triggered a trap -- either by pinging the address before offering it and getting a reply, or by receiving a DHCPDECLINE from a client after that client's own gratuitous ARP revealed a duplicate. Knowing which method fired matters because it tells an admin whether the conflict was caught proactively (server-side ping before assignment) or reactively (client noticed after receiving the address). A value of ping(1) in a trap means the server itself found the address already live on the wire before ever handing it out, whereas gratuitousArp(2) means the client received the address first and then discovered the conflict itself.
