An admin building alert-filtering rules in a network management system relies on this common severity field to route, for example, only critical and major traps to a paging system while sending minor and informational traps to a lower-priority log. For example, a VLLI fault trap and a TACACS+ authentication trap from entirely different subsystems would both carry this same severity object, letting a single filtering rule apply device-wide.
