Tracking this separately from the line-layer ESL lets the admin tell whether errors are originating in framing/payload processing on this specific port rather than in the raw physical signal, which points troubleshooting toward the framer/mapper rather than the cabling. For example, if ESP rises steadily while ESL and LOSSL stay at zero, the physical line is clean and the fault is more likely a framing format mismatch (e.g. ESF vs SF) configured on this T1 port.
