This counter increments whenever the switch receives an IGMP packet whose type field doesn't match any of the standard join, leave, query, or report codes it knows how to process. Because IGMP has a small, well-known set of message types, a nonzero value here on a production port usually means an older or vendor-nonstandard IGMP variant, or malformed traffic, is reaching the switch rather than normal subscriber activity. For example, a legacy multicast source still emitting an outdated or proprietary control packet type could tick this counter up by a few dozen over a day without ever generating a normal join or leave event.
