Description: Extends PIM multicast routing configuration and neighbor state on Avaya/Nortel BayStack ERS switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BAY-STACK-PIM-EXT-MIB?

BAY-STACK-PIM-EXT-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya-originated MIB (Bay Networks lineage) that extends standard PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) management on BayStack/ERS series switches and routers, adding objects for PIM virtual neighbor relationships and active rendezvous-point (RP) mapping per multicast group. It exposes multicast routing configuration and state, specifically virtual neighbor addressing/row status and the currently active RP and its priority for each multicast group/mask. Its monitoring value is primarily about the operational health of the multicast control plane -- confirming that PIM neighbors are up and that RP-to-group mappings are correctly and consistently elected -- rather than hardware sensors. It is an extension MIB that depends on and complements the standard PIM-MIB, adding vendor-specific detail Nortel needed beyond the IETF definition. It is deployed in enterprise/campus networks running Nortel/Avaya BayStack Ethernet Routing Switches configured for IP multicast routing. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-PIM-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-PIM-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Avaya BayStack Ethernet Routing Switches (ERS)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bspimePimVirtualNeighborTable to confirm a PIM virtual neighbor at a given bspimePimVirtualNeighborAddress remains in an active row status, and would check bspimePimGroupActiveRPMappingTable for a given bspimePimGroupActiveRPMappingGroupAddress to see which bspimePimGroupActiveRPMappingActiveRP was elected and at what bspimePimGroupActiveRPMappingPriority. A missing or unexpectedly changing active RP for a group would indicate an RP election problem disrupting multicast delivery, and bspimeNotifications would fire to alert on such state changes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PIM virtual neighbor status
  • PIM virtual neighbor addresses
  • active rendezvous-point (RP) per multicast group
  • RP priority
  • PIM-related trap notifications
