Category: VPN and Security, Vendor: Avaya

Description: Manages DHCP snooping binding tables and trusted port configuration on Avaya/Nortel ERS switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BAY-STACK-DHCP-SNOOPING-MIB?

BAY-STACK-DHCP-SNOOPING-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya (BayStack/ERS switch family) proprietary MIB that manages DHCP snooping, a security feature that tracks legitimate DHCP client-to-IP bindings and enforces trusted vs. untrusted ports, including DHCP Option 82 relay-agent information insertion. It exposes per-VLAN and per-interface configuration state (enable flags, trust status, Option 82 settings) organized in bsDhcpSnoopingVlanTable and bsDhcpSnoopingIfTable, plus notifications for snooping events. This is primarily a software/security-feature status MIB: it lets an administrator confirm whether DHCP snooping and Option 82 are actually active on the switch, VLAN, and port, and which ports are trusted, which is critical for validating a device's security posture rather than its physical health. It complements standard interface (IF-MIB) and VLAN MIBs by adding a DHCP-snooping-specific security layer on top of them. It is deployed on Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) products in enterprise access-layer networks to prevent rogue DHCP server attacks, as defined in the BAY-STACK-DHCP-SNOOPING-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-DHCP-SNOOPING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS)/BayStack switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bsDhcpSnoopingVlanEnabled and bsDhcpSnoopingVlanOption82Enabled per entry in bsDhcpSnoopingVlanTable to confirm snooping is active on a given VLAN, then check bsDhcpSnoopingIfTrusted in bsDhcpSnoopingIfTable to verify only uplink ports are marked trusted. If bsDhcpSnoopingIfTrusted is unexpectedly true on an access port, that port could accept rogue DHCP server replies, a real security exposure. bsDhcpSnoopingNotifications would alert on binding violations or attempts by an untrusted port to send DHCP server traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DHCP snooping enable state (global/VLAN/interface)
  • Option 82 insertion status
  • port trust configuration
  • DHCP snooping binding violations
  • per-VLAN snooping configuration
