Description: Appian Communications SONET ring access system buffer pool utilization management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is APPIAN-BUFFERS-MIB?

APPIAN-BUFFERS-MIB is a proprietary MIB from Appian Communications for its SONET-ring access/switching platform (OSAP), used to manage internal buffer-pool resources that queue traffic across the switch fabric. It exposes per-node, per-buffer-size statistics - total buffers, total buffer credits, local/remote service counts, and remote pool misses - alongside buffer-pool configuration objects. This is a performance/resource-health MIB: rising remote pool misses (acSwitchBuffStatsTotalRemPoolMisses) indicate buffer exhaustion that can cause packet drops or service degradation under load, making it valuable for spotting congestion-driven faults before they visibly affect traffic. It ties into the vendor's own node-indexing scheme (acSwitchBuffStatsNodeId) rather than an external standard MIB. It is deployed on Appian SONET ring access-network elements used by carriers for TDM/packet access aggregation. Engineers can download the APPIAN-BUFFERS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in APPIAN-BUFFERS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Appian Communications SONET ring access switch (OSAP platform)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll acSwitchBuffStatsTotalBuffs and acSwitchBuffStatsTotalBuffCredits per acSwitchBuffStatsNodeId/acSwitchBuffStatsBuffSize combination in acSwitchBuffStatsTable to track how many buffers of each size class are allocated and available. A climbing acSwitchBuffStatsTotalRemPoolMisses count would indicate the node is running out of buffer credits for remote services, a leading indicator of congestion-related packet loss. acSwitchBuffCfgTable entries would be checked to confirm configured buffer pool sizing matches operational needs given current acSwitchBuffStatsTotalLocalServices and acSwitchBuffStatsTotalRemoteServices counts.

What Can Be Monitored

  • buffer pool allocation per size class
  • total buffer credits available
  • local/remote service counts
  • remote buffer pool misses
  • buffer pool configuration
