Description: Alteon WebSystems MIB covering the application switching fabric, used to manage ASF module configuration and interconnect status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ALTEON-ASF-MIB?

ALTEON-ASF-MIB is a proprietary MIB from Alteon WebSystems (later Nortel) for the Alteon Switched Firewall (ASF) module within their application-switch product line. It is intended to expose configuration and interconnect status for the switched-firewall module operating as part of a broader Alteon switch chassis, though the module description available here is very terse and no sample objects were provided. Where such a MIB typically supports monitoring, it would be expected to cover the operational/hardware status of the interconnect link between the switch fabric and the firewall module, indicating whether the module is reachable and passing traffic correctly, alongside its filtering configuration. It likely builds on Alteon's broader switch-fabric MIB architecture used across its application-switching product family. It is deployed in Alteon WebSystems/Nortel Alteon Application Switch chassis using ASF modules positioned in front of server farms or data-center network segments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ALTEON-ASF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALTEON-ASF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alteon WebSystems / Nortel Alteon Application Switch (ASF module)

Monitoring Examples

No specific object or table names were provided for this module, so a concrete polling scenario cannot be described with confidence. Based on the short description alone, a plausible use would be checking an ASF module's interconnect status object to detect when the switched-firewall blade loses its link to the switching fabric, which would surface as a state change on that object.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ASF module interconnect status
  • switched firewall module configuration state

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using asfPortInBytes OID:

Select an Alteon WebSystems (Nortel) Application Switch (ASF firewall module) (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type asfPortInBytes into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of bytes ingressing the port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
